| Sthayi | सखी अब कैसो करत है मोर सोर | Sakhi ab kaiso karat hai mor sor | Friend, what a clamour the peacock is making now! |
| Sthayi | अब कैसो करत है मोर और बोलत है पपीहा जोर जोर | Ab kaiso karat hai mor aur bolat hai papiha jor jor | What a clamour the peacock makes, and the papiha calls loudly. |
| Antara | सुन कोयल की कूक जिया में हूक उठत है | Sun koyal ki kuk jiya men huk uthat hai | Hearing the cuckoo’s call, a pang rises in my heart. |
| Antara | कदर और कैसे जैयूं नाहीं होवत भोर | Kadar aur kaise jaiyun naahin hovat bhor | Kadar, ‘aur kaise jaiyun’; dawn has not yet come. |
Word notes
Mor, papiha and koyal fill the setting with bird calls. Kuk is the cuckoo’s call, while huk turns that sound into an ache within the heart. Jor jor stresses insistent loudness. Bhor is dawn, the end of the speaker’s long night.
