Beta (under development)

Ahir Bhairav

A morning raga with komal Re and Ni, shuddha Dha and a resting centre on Ma.

Reading the swaras

Sa is the reference pitch. The shuddha notes are S R G M P D N; r g d n denote komal Re, Ga, Dha and Ni. M^ denotes tivra Ma. An arrow after a note places it in the upper (↑) or lower (↓) octave. Without an arrow, the note belongs to the middle octave.

Overview

Ahir Bhairav brings the gravity of komal Re together with the softer descent through shuddha Dha and komal Ni. All seven notes are available in both directions, but the raga is more than its scale: the turn G M r S and the approach from lower Ni give its phrases a recognisable shape. Ma provides a place to pause. Its calm, inward character suits the early morning.

Grammar & signature

Let the lower half speak through G M r S, giving komal Re a gentle oscillation before returning to Sa. In the upper half, keep Dha shuddha and Ni komal. The phrase D n D P returns towards Ma without bringing in Bhairav’s komal Dha. A pause on Ma lets the two halves meet without rushing the line.

Pakad / chalan (illustrative)

  • G M r S
  • D n D P, M G M r S
  • n↓ r S

The short return from lower Ni to Re and Sa is especially useful for hearing the raga without running the whole scale.

Phrase examples

  • Opening: S r G M, G M r S.
  • Upper movement: M P D n S↑, S↑ n D P.
  • Closing: P M G M r S.
  • Keep Dha shuddha and Ni komal. Changing them to d and N turns the note material towards Bhairav.

Allied ragas & differentiation

  • Bhairav uses komal Dha and shuddha Ni. Ahir Bhairav keeps komal Re but changes these to shuddha Dha and komal Ni.
  • Kafi shares the upper notes P D n. Its Re is shuddha and Ga komal; Ahir Bhairav instead has komal Re and shuddha Ga.
