    1. Repertoire

     

    Candidates must perform a balanced program of three contrasting pieces selected from the Trinity Grade 7 syllabus, ensuring at least one piece from each group.

    Focus areas include:

    • Expressive phrasing, tone control, and stylistic accuracy
    • Mastery of rhythm, articulation, and tempo variation
    • Dynamic interpretation and musical communication


    2. Scales & Arpeggios (Four octaves, hands together)
     

    Scales: 

    • Ab and E major, G# and E minor (harmonic & melodic)
    • Chromatic scale in similar motion a minor 3rd apart, LH starting on C, RH starting on Eb
    • E major scale in 3rds (two octaves, hands separately)

     

    Arpeggios:

    • Diminished 7ths starting on Ab and E
    • Dominant 7ths in the keys of Ab and E
    • E major contrary motion (two octaves)
       

    Exercises: Candidates prepare three technical exercises: one from each of the three prescribed groups.


    3. Music Theory

    • Irregular time signatures and changing meters
    • Understanding ornamentation (turns, mordents, appoggiaturas, grace notes)
    • Recognizing and writing pentatonic major, pentatonic minor, and blues scales
    • Recognizing and writing Dorian mode scales starting on C, D, F, or G
    • Identifying an extract written using Dorian mode
    • Recognizing and writing whole-tone scales


    4. Aural Skills

    • Identify modulations to relative major/minor, dominant, or subdominant keys
    • Recognize changes in texture, articulation, and harmonic progressions
    • Identify melodic and rhythmic differences in a played excerpt.

     

    5. Transposing melody

    • Transposing melodies up or down an octave from treble clef to bass clef and vice versa, ensuring fluidity and tonal accuracy. 
    • Focus on mastery of key signatures and transposition for any required instrument.


    6. Practice Tips

    • Divide large repertoire pieces into smaller sections, practicing hands separately before combining them for better coordination.
    • Pay attention to dynamics, articulation, and expression while maintaining a relaxed posture and controlled movements.
    • Refine speed and finger control with Hanon No. 1–31, using rhythmic alterations for variety.

  • Demonstrate advanced technical control, expressive playing, and interpretative skills.
  • Develop a strong grasp of key modulations, harmonies, and modal scales.
  • Strengthen performance confidence and stage presence.
  • Be fully prepared to appear for the Trinity Grade 7 Piano Examination.
