Word notes
पायन (pāyan) is Braj for “at the feet”. The song advises bowing politely, then keeping apart.
Guniyan means knowledgeable or accomplished people; nyaro means apart. Folded hands convey courteous disengagement.
Complete beat-aligned score
Rows begin at beat 9; sam falls in the third group. Every row has sixteen beats. Teental has a wave on 9 and claps on 1, 5 and 13.
How to read this notation
Sa is the chosen reference pitch. Note signs used in this score:
M = shuddha Ma; P = Pa; S = Sa; d = komal Dha; g = komal Ga; R = shuddha Re; n = komal Ni.
↑ marks the upper octave and ↓ the lower octave; an unmarked note is in the middle octave.
Each separate beat position is one matra. Joined notes fall within that beat. — continues the previous sound; · is an unsung position. Padding before an entry or after a close does not add another cycle.
Within-beat durations are exact only where specified. Learn the execution of glides, graces and inflection by listening.
Within a grouped column, spaces separate beats; letters joined without spaces share a beat. The column heading states the beat numbers.

Pickups, sam and return
Both sections enter at beat 9. In Sthayi 1, pari-ye occupies beats 9–12, pāyan beats 13–16, vāke reaches sam, and sajani closes at beat 8. The next row begins jo at 9, māne at 13, guniyan at sam and sikh in the final division. The opening can return at beat 9 immediately after this close.
Antara 1 begins hāth joṛ at beat 9 and reaches sam on nyāro. The next row begins aise at 9 and reaches sam on pās. In the final row, Daras begins at 9, vā at 15 and soṅ on sam. The held komal Dha closes at beat 8, allowing the sthayi Ma pickup at beat 9.
Notes on the score
The opening is M M P S↑. In Antara 2, beat 4 is middle-register Sa; the following S↑R↑ returns to the upper register. Keep joined notes within one beat and learn the glides by listening.
Learning sequence
- Speak the text with the adopted pāyan reading in the first line, and explain why the poem advises distance.
- Count from beat 9 through sam, with the third table division landing on beat 1.
- Learn the two sthayi rows on swara syllables, keeping the upper Ga and Re in the second row distinct from middle notes.
- Add the three antara rows, including the syllable joins across divisions and the explicitly retained octave change.
- Join both sections and return on beat 9. Add a teacher's demonstrated vocal inflection only after the fixed notes, syllables and cycle are stable.
Pitfalls
The left edge is not sam. Check beat-4 middle Sa, grouped notes and octave signs.
