Beta (under development)

Tappa

A vocal form recognised by quick, intricate and closely connected melodic runs.

History

Tappa is traditionally said to derive from the songs of camel-drivers of north-west India / Punjab, later refined into an art-music form (a development often associated with Ghulam Nabi "Shori Miyan").

Structure & performance

Set to a raga (often lighter ragas such as Khamaj, Kafi, Bhairavi) and a semi-classical tala; the character comes from its distinctive fast, granular taan-work rather than from long slow elaboration. A related hybrid, tapp-khayal, blends tappa's taans into a khayal frame.

Relationship to raga, tala, tempo

Raga = melody; tala = a semi-classical cycle; the signature is the taan style, not the tempo label.
