Tarana

A vocal form using rhythmic syllables as its text.

Definition

Tarana is a lively vocal form whose text is made up of rhythmic/abstract syllables (for example, tana, derena and dim), used to build momentum and rhythmic excitement. It is typically sung at a fast tempo and often closes a khayal presentation.

Structure & performance

Set to a raga and a tala (frequently a fast Teental); it has a sthayi and antara like other compositions, but the "lyrics" are syllabic. Development leans on taans, layakari and crisp bol patterns; some taranas incorporate a short Persian/Farsi couplet or sargam passage.

History

Traditionally associated with Amir Khusrau.

Relationship to raga, tala, tempo

Raga = melody; tala = cycle; tempo = usually drut. The syllabic text is the form's signature, not a tempo.
