Bageshri

An introspective night raga shaped by komal Ga, komal Ni and restrained Pa.

Reading the swaras

S R G M P D N are shuddha notes, r g d n are komal notes, and M^ is tivra Ma. ↑ marks the upper octave and ↓ the lower; unmarked notes are in the middle octave. — continues the previous sound, · marks an unsung position, and parentheses indicate grace notes.

Overview

Bageshri is a gentle, introspective night raga built on komal Ga and komal Ni over an otherwise shuddha frame. Its character comes from the caressing M g R S descent and the S n↓ D↓ / n↓ S M approaches, with Pa held back — used mostly as a soft touch in descent rather than a resting point. The mood is one of quiet longing.

Grammar

  • Komal Ga and komal Ni give the raga its shade; Ma and Sa are its anchors (vadi–samvadi).
  • Sparing Pa is the characteristic constraint: emphasising Pa pushes the raga toward its Kafi-thaat neighbours. How strictly Pa is limited varies by tradition.

Pakad / chalan (illustrative)

These phrases illustrate the treatment described on this page. Phrase shape and emphasis can differ between teachers.

  • S n↓ D↓, n↓ S M, D↓ n↓ S, M g R S
  • Rest on Ma and Sa; approach M g R S for the signature falling phrase.

Phrase examples

  • Belongs: S g M D n S↑, S↑ n D M, D M g R S, n↓ S M.
  • Avoid / careful: a strong, resting Pa or a straight Kafi-like line dilutes Bageshri.
  • Common learner errors: singing shuddha Ga/Ni; over-using Pa; missing the oblique S n↓ D↓/n↓ S M approaches.

Allied ragas & differentiation

  • Rageshri — a classic near-neighbour; the Bageshri/Rageshri pair is a standard differentiation (shared mood, different note-treatment).
  • Bhimpalasi — same Kafi thaat and komal g/n, but Bhimpalasi leans on Pa and Ma with a different aroha; a good contrast within the family.
  • Family: Kafi thaat (with Kafi, Bhimpalasi and others).

Typical development

Bageshri suits a slow, meditative vilambit exposition around S n↓ D↓ and M g R S, opening into a drut chhota khayal. Widely loved in khayal and also in semi-classical settings.
