Malkauns
A five-note raga with komal Ga, Dha and Ni, omitting Re and Pa.
Reading the swaras
S R G M P D N are shuddha notes, r g d n are komal notes, and M^ is tivra Ma. ↑ marks the upper octave and ↓ the lower; unmarked notes are in the middle octave. — continues the previous sound, · marks an unsung position, and parentheses indicate grace notes.
Overview
Malkauns is among the most ancient and imposing ragas — a pentatonic built on komal Ga, Dha and Ni, with no Re and no Pa. The absence of Pa (usually a strong pillar) throws weight onto Ma and Sa and gives Malkauns its deep, still, almost hypnotic gravity. It is a raga of the deep night.

Phrase examples
- Belongs:
S g M d n S↑(audav ascent),S↑ n d M g S(descent),M g M d. - Avoid / careful: any Re or Pa belongs to other ragas; lower/middle-register emphasis does not prohibit upper-register phrases, including those in the compositions here.
- Common learner errors: slipping in Pa; rushing what should be a slow, weighty exposition.
Allied ragas & differentiation
- Chandrakauns — the same frame but with shuddha Ni in place of komal Ni; the Malkauns / Chandrakauns pair is a clean one-note differentiation.
Typical development
Malkauns invites a slow, weighty vilambit exploration in the lower register before opening upward; powerful in both vocal and instrumental treatment.
