Distinctive feature
Rupak is widely taught as the tala whose sam falls on a khali (an "empty"/unstressed beat) rather than a clap — unusual, since most talas resolve onto a stressed sam. How strictly this is observed varies by tradition, and the counting treatment should be read in that context.
Theka (illustrative)
A skeletal pattern for following the cycle; accompaniment and bol choices vary with the performance tradition.

Laya & repertoire
Medium-tempo khayal, many bhajans and semi-classical pieces sit in Rupak; its 7-beat cycle gives a lilting, slightly off-balance feel.
