Kambhoji

A major rakti raga of the Harikambhoji family, shaped by vakra movement, gamaka and a tightly constrained occasional N3.

The sound

Kambhoji is expansive and phrase-led. Its modern outline uses N2 in descent and normally omits Ni in ascent, while an occasional N3 appears only in established ornamental contexts. That foreign note does not replace the raga's core N2.

Scale

Svara sequence
Ascent — arohana S R2 G3 M1 P D2 Ṡ
Descent — avarohana Ṡ N2 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S

Svara key: R2 chatusruti rishabha, G3 antara gandhara, M1 suddha madhyama, D2 chatusruti dhaivata, N2 kaisiki nishada; N3 kakali nishada is occasional and phrase-bound. Parent: Melakarta 28, Harikambhoji, in common modern classification.

How to recognise Kambhoji

  • Listen for curved, ornamented motion rather than a literal up-and-down scale.
  • N2 anchors the ordinary descent; a brief N3 is a marked colour, not a new scale degree to use freely.
  • Compared with Harikambhoji, Kambhoji's omitted ascending Ni and characteristic turns create a distinct identity.
