Mayamalavagowla
Melakarta 15, a complete seven-note raga and the long-established framework for many first Carnatic exercises.
The sound
Mayamalavagowla is a sampurna melakarta: all seven svaras occur in order in both directions. Its contrasting small and large note intervals make the pitch relationships distinctive, while performance still requires Carnatic intonation and gamaka.

How to recognise Mayamalavagowla
- Both ascent and descent retain all seven notes in direct order.
- The narrow S–R1 and P–D1 movements contrast with the wider R1–G3 and D1–N3 intervals.
- Saveri shares this svara set in descent, but its usual ascent omits Ga and Ni.
Why beginners meet it early
Purandara Dasa's graded exercise tradition is conventionally taught in Mayamalavagowla. The raga is therefore familiar from sarali and janta exercises, but those exercises are a teaching framework rather than its complete melodic personality.
