Bhajan
A devotional song expressing praise or spiritual longing.
Definition
A bhajan is a devotional song addressed to a deity or expressing spiritual longing. It is not a strict classical form — its rules are flexible and its appeal is direct and emotional — but bhajans are frequently rendered by classical and semi-classical artists, who bring raga colour and expressive nuance to them, often as a light concluding piece.
Structure & performance
Typically a memorable refrain alternating with verses, set to an accessible raga and a light tala (Kaharwa, Dadra, Rupak). Emphasis is on clear text, singable melody and devotional feeling rather than elaborate development; classical singers may add restrained alap, bol and light taans.
Relationship to raga, tala, tempo
Raga colour is used loosely in service of devotion; tala is usually light; tempo varies. Bhajan is a form/genre, distinct from tempo terms.
