Tyagaraja
A composer of the Carnatic Trinity, known for Telugu kritis in devotion to Rama.
Tyagaraja (1767–1847) is one of the Carnatic Trinity, alongside Muttuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri. He composed prolifically in Telugu, mostly in devotion to Rama.
His musical voice
His kritis pair singable, speech-like melody with deep bhakti, and he often explores a single raga across several compositions. His signature, Tyagaraja, is woven into the lyrics. He is remembered for shaping the kriti into its familiar pallavi–anupallavi–charanam form; of a very large output, several hundred compositions survive.
Begin with these compositions

These five are the Ghana-raga Pancharatna, a celebrated set often performed together.
A brief life
Born in Tiruvarur, he settled at Tiruvaiyaru on the Kaveri, and devotion to Rama was central to his life. His disciples carried his compositions into the concert tradition, where they remain central, and he is honoured each year at the Tyagaraja Aradhana.
