Jati
The number of primary counts in a laghu.
In the Suladi tala system, jati determines a laghu's length. It does not change the two-count drutam or one-count anudrutam.

Jati and Gati
Jati determines the laghu count. Gati determines subdivisions within each count. Chatusra-jati Triputa has eight primary counts even when sung in tisra Gati.
