Khanda-jati Jhampa

An 8-count cycle grouped 5 + 1 + 2.

Khanda-jati Jhampa is an 8-count tala in the seven-family Suladi system. Its cycle is 5 + 1 + 2 = 8.

Count and hand actions

Anga Counts Hand action
Laghu 1–5 Clap, then 4 finger counts
Anudrutam 6 Clap
Drutam 7–8 Clap, then wave

Keep each count equally spaced. After count 8, return to the first clap to begin the next avartana, or cycle. A laghu includes its opening clap: it is not a clap followed by 5 additional counts.

Follow one cycle

1 2 3 4 5 | 6 | 7 8 |

The separators show changes of anga. Speak the numbers steadily while doing the actions above.

Jati and Gati

Jati sets the laghu length: here it is 5. Gati sets the subdivisions within each count. These are different choices: a 5-count laghu does not require 5 subdivisions.

In Chatusra Gati, speak ta ka dhi mi evenly within each count. At one-fold Kala, this gives 8 × 4 = 32 subdivisions per cycle. At two-fold Kala in the count-expansion convention, each hand count spans twice as much subdivision time.

Where the music begins

The Graha is the music’s entry point relative to the cycle. It may fall on the first count, after it or before it; the tala name alone does not specify the entry.
